can I use my a/v out connectons to record tv show on my dvd recorder that doesn't have a seperate tuner?

I ran the cables from the TV a/v out jacks to dvd recorder and can record sound but no picture

You are probably connected to the TV's audio outputs and video INPUT. There are almost no TVs at all that have a video output, so the answer is that you could if your TV has a video output, but it probably doesn't have one.
