The Avatar – by James Cameron

‘The Avatar’ by James Cameron

This film has all of the promises of being one of the greatest film of modern years. It is directed by none other than James Cameron, the man behind ‘The Titanic’ and other masterpieces.

It is without doubt one of the best and most thrilling movies you are likely to see. No joke.

As I said, this $400 million plus movie follows on from the pedigree collection of movies created by James Cameron that have brought in billions of dollars worldwide.

Here is a little taste of the movie – and don’t worry, I haven’t given away any of the plot spoilers (any more than some of the trailers! Seriously, I think if you watch the main trailer you can pick up the gist of the entire film!).

The film takes place in the year 2154, when humans are mining a distant moon for a mineral known as unobtainium which is the solution to the Earth’s energy needs. Pandora, as the moon is known, has been mined for 30 years and now operations are moving ever closer to the land of the Na’vi. The Na’vi are a humanoid race with bright blue skin, they glow in the dark and have tails.

The complication, apart from the natural resistance from the Na’vi to having their lands destroyed by an alien race (us), is that the atmosphere on Pandora is unbreathable. So when the military need to send in the army to remove the Na’vi, they use a futuristic technology known as Avatar.

This allows a human to remotely use a Na’vi/Human body hybrid that looks identical to an indigenous Na’vi from outside the planet. An example of similar technology today would be the U.S. army operating drone attack aircraft in Afghanistan from an Air Force Base in the U.S.

Jake Sully is a man who has lost control of his legs, and so he decides to go into the Avatar program as it will allow him to have the full use of his body again. His mission is to infiltrate the Na’vi, but naturally things get complicated when he meets a beautiful female called Neytiri. He then faces a choice of being loyal to Earth and the human race, or else joining the Na’vi and fighting the invasion of Pandora.

There are plot twists within plot twists, the graphics are unprecedented and overall you are thoroughly engrossed and drawn into the film.

If you get a chance, I would strongly recommend watching the movie in 3D, as the industry experts themselves are praising the unmatched effects.

I’m sure you’ll find yourself watching ‘The Avatar’ many, many times.
