If I wanted a production worthy camcorder, what product would I get and how much would it cost?
I am looking for a nice video camera for a friend who produces and shoots short movies. What kind of camera should I buy?

What is your budget?
At the low-end, consumer-grade camcorders - anything under about US$1,300 will not have lenses and imaging chips big enough to behave well under low light. Also, consumer-grade hard drive, flash memory and DVD camcorders typically compress the video stream too much and there is a negative impact on video quality.
Some "prosumer" camcorders can handle a wide range of video requirements - like the Sony HDR-FX7 and HDR-FX1000. Both can record to standard definition DV and high definition HDV format to miniDV tape. The Canon GL2 does standard definition only. Note their larger lens and imaging chips size. They have a 1/8" (3.5mm) audio-in stereo jack. There is no prosumer hard disc drive, flash memory or DVD camcorder.
When you jump to pro-grade, there is some addition firmware in the camcorder - and the more obvious difference is the use of XLR audio-in connectors (this can be changed in the prosumer environment by using an XLR adapter like those from juicedLink or BeachTek). The usual suspects at the low end of the pro range include:

There are very few hdd and flash memory pro-grade camcorders - mostly, the hdd camcorders are miniDV tape using external hard drives (from Sony or Focus Enhancements' FireStore series)... or the Panasonic-specific P2 cards or the Sony HVR-Z7U's use of compact flash. They record to the same formats miniDV tape does - DV or HDV. Panasonic has a couple of AVCHD camcorders in the pro family, but I have not yet seen any pros using them - they are limited to 24 mbps avchd/mts digital video stream - HDV does 25 mbps.
Then there is a jump to the Sony HDCAM/XDCAM series, Canon XHL series and JVC GY series...
Then there's a huge jump to the Red Scarlet and Red One... and gear from Silicon Imaging...

Made for tv movie productions?
I'm not sure quite how made-for-tv movies recoup their costs but their are still quite a few tv movies made. Especially on cable channels. For a 2-hour movie, what is the usual budget range and how is determined? And number of shooting days? What about talent budget? If all of the actors are unknown celebrities with only one or two who are somewhat popular on a tv show how much do they get paid and how is that worked out? Can they possibly make any profit from a tv movie? I know they don't cost mega millions but still can 30 mins of advertising make up for the cost?
