Film Academy - Producers?

I am applying to the NYFA (New York Film Academy) Producers course. I like the role a Producer has in motion picture. The course is one year but prior to enrolling I do not know if a Producer is independent/ or works for a movie studio such as MGM, Universal, Sony Pictures etc? I am familiar with Albert R Broccoli who created his own production company as did Jerry Bruckheimer and many others. Is this what all producers must do or after finishing the NYFA course ( by the way not a degree) will I be able to apply for the role at major film studios? I have scouted the major film studios site and the conglomerate of jobs are business and have nothing to do with the creative process such as directing, producing, screenwriting etc?

Please in summary can someone pathways one takes to produce films?

In short, I think that you just have to be open to all possibilities. You will probably have to start at the bottom, for example, working as a grip or assistant on a movie set or for a movie studio. I work for a former movie producer and she didn't start out trying for that job. She worked for 21st Century films as a marketing assistant and then she pitched an idea for a film and boom, she was producing her own picture. Now, she has her own company, thanks to the money she made working for 21st Century. Make lots of contacts, be willing to start at the bottom, and have faith! I want to become TV show producer and create my own TV show...but I started at the bottom. I work as a videoeditor for the CBS affiliate in my hometown, then I got a job producing the nightly news segment. This is my slow crawl up the ladder and hopefully someday I will be my own boss. Good luck!

Funny, poignant, painful and joyous - That's the Jessica Fischer's story as presented on the DVD "What's So Funny? A transformation of epic proportions." Jessica was a successful stand up comic who at the young age of 23 looked obesity square in the face and laughed on stage in New York City. She captured audiences with her self-deprecating fat humor.

Then she underwent gastric bypass surgery, lost half of her body weight and suddenly she wasn't so funny. It turns out former fatty just isn't as funny as the 300 pound girl making fun of her own obese self. Jessica found herself reinventing her act and herself, while at the same time trying to hold on to who she was before surgery. Can't we all relate to that?

The film not only features Jessica, but also her support network: parents, brother, sister, friends, and even surgeon Dr. Shaw. Jessica's sister is course and skeptical, openly criticizing the "easy way out". She says, "You're 23! What are you doing? Get off you ass and do something - walk around the block." But her sister later concedes how hard Jessica worked for her weight loss and that WLS was, in fact, the only option for her. "It was not an easy fix," she states, "she needed the help. I don't think she knew how to get out of her own way."

Dr. Shaw calls Jessie a model patient. He said what weight loss surgery does is open a window to make it possible to change a lifetime of eating behaviors and misconceptions. He said the physical changes from gastric bypass are predictable, "What is more profound than the physical change is the psychological and social changes. Weight loss surgery corrects a medical problem that comes with a lot of social and psychological baggage."

The best part of this film is that it is real. Weight loss surgery is tough and the road is bumpy and twisted and challenging. It's tough being fat and it's tough losing weight. Not just for the comedienne on stage - but for every person brave enough to "take the easy way out." A definite must-see film for the LivingAfterWLS audience and the people they love.

"WHAT'S SO FUNNY?" follows Jessica's journey after her surgery. Not only does she lose the weight, but also her drive and ability to perform comedy, which she perceived as her "ticket" into the world of entertainment. While her physical transformation is remarkable, it is the emotional turmoil she experiences afterwards, which is truly life changing and proves to be more than she bargained for.

The DVD "What's So Funny?" may be purchased directly from Chrysalis Productions, http://www.chrysalisproductions.com/home.html. Chrysalis Productions is a New Jersey based non-profit organization dedicated to the production of human interest, educational, historical and/or socially relevant documentary films designed to inform and enlighten the general public.

Here’s what the critics are saying -
The film takes place mainly in the backroom of a closed company with flashbacks to the Bronx in 1958 and to Vietnam in 1968. Stunning cinematography and lighting with a compelling original soundtrack with prestigious musicians including jazz bassist Jim Hughart, three time MVP and Emeritus award recipient from NARAS (National Academy for Recoding Arts and Sciences). Jim Hughart has been the bass player for just about every major recording artist in the last fifty years. He’s toured with Ella Fitzgerald, Fran Sinatra, etc., etc. and tours with Tony Bennett today. Also solo Guitarist and composer John Chiodini, who has recorded and toured with Peggy Lee, Natalie Cole, Nina Simone, Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion. Award winning composer Miloangelo Adamo’s “Jack E’s Theme†(ASCAP) and the new song“Nobody’s Fault But Mine the P.T.S.D. Blues†(BMI), which was written and performed byMr. Simons and has been signed for representation with publishers Alpha Music Inc.
In a recent interview with Independent Film Quarterly Talbot Perry Simons says,“Still the Drums†is a revealing story about the suffering of soldiers who have kept their deeds, guilt and war experiences buried in their hearts and minds forever. Never to tell their stories….Until now!†The project has taken Mr. Simons over 14 years to make, but he adds “I’m thrilled with the profound impact this film has made already. It was a real struggle to get it all done, but one well worth the journey to direct, edit, produce, write original music and act in this film that has now touched so many people and will continue to do so as we are now starting to get several offers for distribution both domestically and worldwide.â€Â
Taking its title from “The Illusion of War,†a poem by Richard Le Gallienne, written at the end of the American Civil War “Still the Drums†approaches its explosive subject from anew perspective. The poem is about the lure of the music and how easily our spirits are captured by the false illusion created by the beat of the marching drum and joyful sounding fife as the parade goes passing, thus causing us to forget what the real horror of a march off to war truly means. Still the Drums will also be shown at a private industry screening for distributors at the American Film Market in Santa Monica November 8th 2009.
Celebrated Stage and film actor turned multi award-winning filmmaker, Talbot Perry Simons will have his latest film â€ÂStill the Drums†has been selected to screen as part ofthe prestigious New York International Independent Film and Video Festival(NYIIFVF). The film will play at 8pm on Saturday October 24th at the Village EastCinema. This compelling film has already been well received by critics and won two awards at their Los Angeles sold out world premier eduring the summer. Still the Drums wasselected by the NYIIFVF Jury as “Winner of Best Feature Directorial Debut†and Winner of Best Screenplay. Written, produced edited and directed by PerrySimons in conjunction with his Production Company, American Patriot Pictures. Still theDrums is a post Vietnam war mystery about friendship, patriotism, heroism and posttraumaticstress disorder (PTSD) This is the compelling intense story of four childhood friends who all enlisted as marines to fight in Vietnam. One doesn’t return he’s declaredM.I.A. and now thirty-nine years later, his bones are found and an ensuing mystery beginsto unfold. As old war memories flood back into life the comradeship of these old best friendsare put to the ultimate test. This film will delight lovers of good old fashioned drama andmystery films. It’s already been called by audience members “One of the best motionpictures about veterans every made!†The film had moments that reminded film critic DonHaderlein of “Coming Home†and “The BestYears Of Our Lives†mixed in with flashbacksof childhood as rich as “Stand By Meâ€Â. Still the Drums focuses on friendship, loyaltyand morality. Although the film is about Vietnam audiences find that it can apply universally to any war. The film makes the point that for all veterans; their war is neverreally over.

what are the chances of getting an interview with ACME talent agency??

i am thinking of sending in my resume to them but i know they are a very good agency so what are the chances of getting in??

i have done 6 commercials 2 tv show and a few films one feature length and some student films not to mention about 50 dance performances (i have been a pre professional dancer since i was 5 and trained with a major company when i was 13 im 14 now) and about 20 plays i also have done many training workshops over the summers and school year and trained with Eddie Foy and was in an off broadway production in new york one summer

do you think i might have a shot at getting an interview?? i also have the "look" according to my agents and certain casting directos lol

-ABTS

You definitely have a shot - but don't panic if they don't call you. You don't have to be with the best agency...you just have to be willing to really work at and you will get there eventually. Acting is half talent half luck I swear.
